I had these from a previous life in my Volvo days.
Great quality reflector, but the lens is way too flat for the sexy round look of the truck.
In an effort to keep with the traditional bulbous look, I would need to stay with the rounded look of vintage head lights.
I found these French made units at the swap meet. I like the unusual fluting, but they had an old rusted reflector, and it uses an old style incandescent bulb.
So what is a hot rodder to do?? Re-reflect of course...
First I pried the flange open, only using the flat part of
the knife as leverage against the glass. A wise man once
said: "Glass is very strong, until it breaks"
Then using a needle nose pliers, I carefully folded the edge back.
One cool French lens to go...
Unless you know the exact position of the bulb, you might as well mark the lens, so it will be properly indexed when you install the new (old) lens.
Blasphemy ?? !! Yeah, probably, if you restoring 1969 Volvos, but we are not... A shallow tap broke the lens. I held the lens inside a paper bag, and used eye protection.
Then I just peeled off the glass and cleaned up the edge.
A very light brush to remove any glass debris before assembly. Do not touch the lens with your fingers.
This Swedish made Hella reflector is of a very high quality, allthought I doubt they make them in Sweden anymore.
Using an epoxy adhesive, I just added the lens to the reflector. I can now use any caliber H4 bulb, but still look cool.
The best of both worlds, vintage style, but great output.
