A Volvo 123GT gets some needed
attention

Over Labor Day weekend I went up to Whidbey Island where we
have our summer house and the
GT is stacked...ahem, stored.
I have not had a chance to work on it at all this summer.
First order of
business:

Too get rid of this under dash panel with gauges that does
not work anyway. Cutting the hose would end up with a lap
full of oil until I get the T-fitting removed at the block.

Well, that's just swell. The brass fitting broke off and a
piece stayed in the block. No easy outs up here, Well, no
test driving then this weekend.
Maybe I should install the fender mirrors instead? After a
world wide research campaign I know where they will go I am
anxious to get them installed.
Time to DRILL!

Besides, I could not wait to get rid of this Impala? door
mirror.
I brought my cordless drill and after careful measuring I
was ready to hit it. Wouldn't you know...The battery was DEAD.
The charged cell is
sitting in the cradle on the main land.
I walked over to my neighbor and borrowed theirs...it was
dead too!!

Disappointed I walked away and fired up the Wagon and went
for a drive.

. Whidbey Island is a very beautiful island with great two
lane blacktops that reminds me a lot of Sweden. The roads
are perfect for a vintage Volvo equipped with an overdrive.
You go between third and fourth gear with the roar from the
SU carbs confirming that I have the right car. 4500 to
5000 rpm is just right...music...
On the straights one can enjoy the
overdrive.
On the glove box shelf I found an old cassette
tape and I fired it up in the player. It was just a fluke
that I left the tape there and it was full of songs that I
played in my Amazon in Sweden well over 30 years ago.
Serious nostalgia trip.

I rolled in to the beach and turned off the B-18 with a bit
of clutch engaged as the high compression and crappy fuel makes it diesel at times.
I sat down and started thinking about drills...Mmmm, I DO
have a battery charger.
Well, first I pointed the wagon northbound to the hardware
store to invest in a set of easy outs.

Back in the garage I hooked up the battery charger and with
a 50% chance of getting the polarity correct.
Got it !

The charger worked well and I got my mirrors installed.
The easy out got the brass fitting out and with the oil
pressure sender in place it was all good.

The car came with the wrong tach so it felt great to install
the correct unit.

The nerdy fender mirrors looks so great on the Amazon. The
car is still a 40 yarder but it is not in the cards right
now to do a full resto. My initial goal is the have the most
complete and correct 123GT that is also a driver. I got some
shinier bumper parts and they are next.
I got the Hella
lights waiting in the wings as well, can't wait to get them
on for the complete GT look but it would not be fair to
install them on these dull bumpers.
More later...
